There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. <I>Gold</I> establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic 50s rock & roll. Likewise, you dont have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. <i>The Wall</i> is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what ranks as Pink Floyds most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right. "Hey You," "Mother," and especially "Comfortably Numb" are subtle, incredible pieces of music. Though complex, they move at a relaxed pace, allowing the listener to absorb them slowly; this kind of pacing was something Pink Floyd excelled at. While the Cash Money Records label continues to suffer through the free-agent exodus of its hottest emcee, Juvenile, Lil Wayne has been slotted in as the crews go-to griot. However, on <I>500 Degreez</I> Waynes inability to rap about subjects other than Bentleys, babes, blunts, and booze severely limits his career possibilities. On the profanity-laced "F*** You" and "Gangsta S***," his mediocre and indistinct rhymes and flows are barely saved by Mannie Freshs electro-funk beat schemes. Thats not to say that Fresh isnt coasting either, performing his normal interpolation-heavy productions (e.g., "Way of Life" is a spin-off on Junior Mafias "Get Money"). Why Lil Weezy would spend three-quarters of his studio time boasting about how much moola he makes ("Get That Dough") and how great he thinks he is ("Look at Me") is anybodys guess. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the musics growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the bands singles hold up extremely well, such as "Killer Queen" and "Youre My Best Friend".
